Some universities in the United States have set SAT prerequisites to even be considered for admission. The University of North Carolina (UNC) System, a 17-campus consortium of public universities, has established a minimum SAT composite score of 880 (on the 2016 version) or 800 (on the old test) for admission eligibility. However, meeting eligibility requirements does not guarantee admission, and the standards at many campuses are much higher. The flagship UNC-Chapel Hill, for example, reports composite middle 50% critical reading and math scores of 1210-1420, which is significantly higher than the scores necessary for mere consideration. At North Carolina State University, the mean combined critical reading and math score for new students is 1256, and at UNC Charlotte, it is approximately 1115. Students preparing for the SAT must become familiar with the SAT requirements and averages of the schools they wish to attend. Students should also note that achieving SAT scores that are higher than the mean for new students at a given institution will give them much better chances of acceptance to that institution.
Manhattan Review's past SAT clients have submitted successful applications to most of the best universities in the United States. Our former students have been accepted to elite postsecondary institutions such as Princeton, MIT, Harvard, Stanford, Yale, Carnegie Mellon, Brown, Columbia, Johns Hopkins, Cornell, UC Berkeley, the University of Virginia, New York University, Georgetown, the University of Pennsylvania, and many other highly ranked colleges and universities. Some of our former pupils now work for Tokyo firms such as Sega Sammy Holdings, Sumitomo Group, TOA Construction Corporation, Mitsubishi Motors, and Otsuka Pharmaceutical. Others have been hired by Fortune 500 businesses, including Express Scripts Holding, Walgreens Boots Alliance, State Farm Insurance, Energy Transfer Equity, and Delta Air Lines. A high-quality postsecondary education is absolutely essential to a successful future. Students who use every opportunity to gain a competitive advantage will be much more likely to secure favorable university admission outcomes. Meet a Tokyo SAT Tutor: Dorothy N.
Dorothy N. ("Dot" to her family, friends, and students) is a native of Bakersfield, California. She graduated magna cum laude from the University of Southern California with a bachelor's degree in anthropology. She then completed a master's degree in education at the University of Arizona. She has been teaching SAT prep in Tokyo since 2014, and she was previously an SAT teacher in the Los Angeles area for five years.
When she was a high school student, Dot's upper-percentile SAT scores helped her secure merit-based financial aid, which was essential to funding her undergraduate education. She uses her own personal experience to encourage all of her students to earn their highest possible SAT scores, and she regularly points out that strong SAT performance can both increase the chances of acceptance and help defray college costs.
